Our Meeting of 2 February
Past President Warren Norton was our chair for an evening of awards.

The Evening’s Program – Awards, Recognitions and Presentations

Our Pride of Workmanship Award recipient – Jo Coles
Jo has been with Buckley’s Entertainment Centre (where our Club meets) for the last 6 years and through the excellent attention to detail and the friendly, efficient and “can do” approach she has demonstrated in her work with our Club members, Jo has exemplified the qualities of service, character and pride in a job well done which this award celebrates.

Recognising our Honorary Members 
Lyn Fleet, Judy Innes and Past President Albie James were presented with certificates which acknowledged their election as honorary members of our Club.
Lyn, Judy, Albie and Pam Mott (who was unable to attend the meeting) have given great service to our Club and our community over many years and we are delighted that they have accepted honorary membership of our Club.

Adrian Innes and the Avenues of Service Award  
Adrian’s certificate took “the long way round’ to get to us from Head Office but it’s eventual arrival afforded us a second opportunity to acknowledge and applaud Adrian’s substantial contribution to his local and international committee in so many ways.

Ross Taylor and Our Town’s ICE Fight
Past President and Assistant Governor Ross was presented with a certificate acknowledging his personal contribution to the community campaign last year directed to raising awareness of, and marshaling action against, the “Ice” epidemic.

Recognising the contribution of our Rotaractors
President Liz and some of her fellow members from the Rotaract Club of Barwon attended our meeting and received a cheque for $2,000.00 in recognition of the vital contribution which the Rotaractors made to the success of our Geelong Show hamburger stand fundraising effort last year.
By running the Saturday night (as well as giving us great help throughout the Show period) the Rotaractors boosted the Club’s takings from the Show which enhanced our charitable account bank balance and gave “us oldies” some much need respite!
Well done, Rotaractors!
Our Club is fortunate indeed to have such an enthusiastic group of young people who demonstrate a strong commitment to helping their local and global community.

The Camp Quality Geelong Convoy is bringing the love and kicking off its second year this Valentine’s Day! With 257 participants entered in 2015 for our inaugural event, we look forward to doubling that number this year so that Camp Quality Victoria can support even more children living with cancer.

Our Shine On Award nominee - Liam O'Neil

During our very busy schedule, we had the pleasure of meeting our Club’s nominee for the 2015-16 Shine On awards.
As some Club members are aware, the Rotary Southern District Shine On committee facilitate an annual ceremony where those with disabilities are recognised.
 PP Graham Thomson introduced Liam who briefly thanked the Club for the nomination. Liam's mum, Ailsa, then spoke about Liam and some of his achievements and dealing with autism. Ailsa also spoke about the Lara District Rotary Club Golf Day on 4th March 2016 and some registration forms were circulated to members after meeting.
It was highlighted that Liam is now doing his own art work and exhibited this work where he has won some prizes. It is intended to invite Liam back to the club after the Shine On recognition day on 17th April to speak about his experiences but any club member wanting more information about Shine On please contact PPs Graham Thomson or Adrian Innes.

Ride the Bellarine – End Polio Now Campaign
Past President Assistant Governor Ross Taylor presented the Club with details of this event which is planned for Sunday 3rd April 2016.
It is a joint project of the Rotary Clubs of Geelong & District under the auspices of District 9780.
A committee made up of Geelong & District Rotarians sets up the project and Justin Higgins & PB Events Management runs it.
 
Ride the Bellarine is purely a recreational ride which has replaced Amy’s Ride which moved to Ballarat in 2014.
The day consists of three rides:
·        The Long Ride of 105kms through Drysdale, Portarlington, Indented Head, St Leonards, Point Lonsdale, Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Thirteenth Beach Road, Barwon Heads.
·        The Short Ride of 60kms through Drysdale, Ocean Grove then joins the long ride; and
·        A Family 20km ride to Point Henry and back. 
The entry fees are $75.00, $55.00 & $25.00 respectively and the registration fees are used to promote & run the event with donations & sponsorships are to be paid directly to The Rotary Foundation.
The Ride the Bellarine Committee is requesting the following:
  • Riders & teams from Rotary Clubs to take part in the Ride;
  • Volunteers to act as marshals from 7.00am to 3.00pm on the day and the request is that clubs supply one (1) volunteer for every four (4) members – which equates to around thirteen (13) for our Club who are required by the end of this month (28 February);
  • High visibility or yellow vests; and
  • Rotary banners, flags, bunting anything bright & colorful.
 
For last year’s ride, our Club provided more that its allocated share of marshals and our members also generously donated $1,780.00 to the event which, when the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation “2 for 1 grant” was added, equated to $5,340.00 which was paid to the End Polio Now campaign.
Incidentally, all donations paid by members are tax deductible and Club donations are used to meet the Club’s budget figure on Rotary Club Central.
The event attracted over 200 riders last year and raised $17,404.00 towards the End Polio Now campaign and, with the Gates Foundation contribution, this equated to $52,212.00.
The Committee is again calling on the generosity and support of this Club for the successful running of this event.
 
Crepe Expectations
Our pancake night will be 9 February at Maison Macvean (Hardings Road, Wallington) and donations for the fundraising raffle would be greatly appreciated.
Bring tables and chairs, drinks and nibbles and insect repellent and dress for the cool of the evening.
Partners, families and friends are welcome as always.

Showgrounds catering
This will need Burger Bodies on the following dates at the Showgrounds so keep a look out for the roster going around or call Adrian or John Birrell.
the Camp Quality convoy on 14 February;
5 March (Holden Day);
11th to 13th March – Music Festival;
12th May (Swap Meet);and
13th to 16th October the Geelong Show.
 
Geelong – District Conference in March
DG Jane has asked that all members who are intending to attend the District 9780 Conference in Geelong on 18-20 March are asked register now - www.setsailforgeelong.com.au or there is a direct link on the District website.
For planning, DG Jane and her committee need to have an idea of numbers and will have to finalize arrangements with the venue pre the Conference.
