Many thanks to PE Janine for the following Bulletin report:
The Evening's Program - Under Your Hat
Denis O'Brien gave the talk on how common poor mental health is. Men in particular don't report and seek help. The stigma attached to mental issues causes great distress, unlike other health issues (cancer, diabetes etc) where people don't feel the same shame and are treated more kindly and sympathetically by society.
Denis teaches a course at AGB and has had a varied career - he was formerly a psychiatric nurse, managed a bar at Magnetic Island, etc.
It seems that nearly half (45%) of the population will experience a mental disorder at some stage in their lives and almost one in five Australians (20%) will experience a mental illness in a 12-month period.
The Major Mental Disorders include Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Personality Disorders
During a one-year period, anxiety disorders will affect 14% of the population and depression will affect 6%.
Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent mental disorders experienced by Australians. Depression alone is predicted to be one of the world’s largest health problems by 2020.
Around one million Australian adults and 100,000 young people live with depression each year.
Women were more likely than men to use services for mental health problems.
Approximately two-thirds of people with a mental illness do not receive treatment in a 12-month period.
Estimates suggest that up to 75 % of people presenting with alcohol and drug problems also have additional mental health problems.
It is estimated that up to 85% of homeless people have a mental illness.
Suicide is a prominent public health concern. From 2009 to 2013, the average number of suicide deaths per year was 2,461. This compares with 1,543 deaths by motor vehicle accident in the same period - that’s about 7 suicides every day!
For every death by suicide, it is estimated that as many as 30 people attempt to end their lives - that is approximately 65,300 suicide attempts each year.
In 2013, approximately 75% of people who died by suicide were males and 25% were females.
There is depression (there are 2 types) and there is anxiety which includes arrange of conditions including General Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorders, Phobias and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
A Mental Health survey of 32, 827 participants revealed that RUMINATION and SELF BLAME where the major causes of Anxiety and Depression
