Is there a first aider or two in the house?
In light of the events at the Christmas function at the Showgrounds, there is a need to identify those members with current first aid certification.
So if you can tell a splint from a splinter and a sprain from a spleen and you have the proof, the Club Secretary would like to record your details.
Dinner Auction
The Rotary Club of Geelong East is planning a Dinner Auction for August 2016.
This is a fun time and on past results, is anticipated to raise over $20,000 to be donated to worthy beneficiaries. We have an opportunity to showcase Rotary in action, to the Geelong community.
This email is a call to nominate beneficiaries, to the criteria as approved by the Board.
Please respond in writing to David Sykes, to the criteria below. Copy to Sue Hill (Director Fundraising) and President Andrew. Your ideas will be appreciated.
Please do not leave to others, as at this date David has not received any nominations.
Potential beneficiaries will present to the club and or attend a meeting.
The selection process criteria will involve the club members with final approval by the Board with reference to the following:

- Two worthy causes, local.
- At least one with a public profile. (i.e. SES, CFA, Sailing for the Disabled)
- Money should go towards a specific project, to align our efforts with an outcome.
- Consider one beneficiary being an organisation involving children or disability (i.e. Sailing for the Disabled).
- Ideally the beneficiaries should be able to make commitments regards raffle ticket sales, attendees and promotion.
Barwon Valley School - call for assistance
Rotarian Don Shields has a son who attends Barwon Valley School and Don is co-ordinating a fundraising and "hands on" project to upgrade the play facilities for these students who have special needs.
Our Club will consider how it can be involved and if any member or their family would like to make some personal contribution, Don (who is the volunteer co-ordinator for the School) would be delighted to receive a call on 0419 390 303.
Eddification - Rotary Foundation
Eddie reported on behalf of Chairman Jonathan and began by referring to the recent verbal coverage of the donations sent to Polio Plus and The Annual Programs Fund contributed by 23 of our members and the follow up details in the following Bulletin. He advised that contributions made following the Pancake Night would be sent onto the Sydney office during the last week of May and encouraged members who intended to complete their Centurion contributions of $100 or a minimum of $10 to note the closing date.
Ride The Bellarine will again be staged on Sunday 3 April and members were invited to either [1] ride in one of three three distances involved [2] act as marshalls or [3] make a direct donation to PolioPlus. Last year our members contributed $1,780 which when matched on a 2 for 1 basis by the Gates Foundation became $5,340. He also pointed out that the $10 or more contributed by members counted towards their actual giving goal in this Rotary Year.
Grants for International Projects: We are moving to cross the "t's" and dot the "i's" of the report required to claim the District's $3,000 which supported Bryan's Water Well project in Cambodia and initial planning is under way for a larger project with a larger grant net year.
Arch Klumph Centenary: Celebrations will run throughout 2016/2017 marking the establishment by Arch of an Endowment Fund in 1917 "For doing Good in the World". After a slow start it went on to become The Rotary Foundation and our Foundation Committee plans to mark the celebration during November this year.
Peace Scholar: Our Rotary Foundation Committee hopes to obtain a grant from the Board once again to support another Peace Scholar.
Showgrounds catering - call for help
We need as many members and friends and others who can assist at the Showgrounds on 11th to 13th March for the Music Festival.
The Rotaractors are looking after Saturday night but other time slots are in need of filling - please call Adrian or John Birrell.
District conference

Tony reminded us of the article in Rotary Down Under ‘Clean Water is Changing Lives’ a partnership between RC Geelong East, District 9780 Foundation Committee and the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh and the Cambodian Organisation for Children and Development (COCD).

Donations in Kind (DlK)
Last week David Beretta reported that DIK had been ransacked and the Landcruiser that had been refurbished was missing. Luckily, the latest is hat the vehicle has now re-appeared & has now been returned albeit with a bit of damage.
Defying The Drift
Stan Deans reports that our Rotary district project Defying the Drift 2016 committee met last Thursday at Marcus Oldham college to plan this year’s event to be held on September 26th tol 28th and our club was represented by Sue Hill, Jenny Acopian & Stan.

A College principal has offered the following words from a judge who regularly deals with youth:
“Always we hear the cry from teenagers, ‘what can we do, where can we go?’
My answer is this: Go home, mow the lawn, wash the windows, learn to cook, build a raft, get a job, visit the sick, study your lessons and after you’ve finished, read a book. Your town does not owe you recreational facilities and your parents do not owe you fun.
The world does not owe you a living, you owe the world something. You owe it your time, energy and talent so that no one will be at war, in sickness and lonely again. In other words grow up, stop being a cry baby, get out of yor dream world and develop a backbone not a wish bone. Start behaving like a responsible person. You are important and you are needed. It’s too late to sit around and wait for somebody to do something someday. Someday is now and the somebody is you.”
Obviously he had never met a Rotary Exchange Student or a Rotaractor!
