Movies at St Mary's

The film was The Good Lie

From Stan Deans:

The film was about a very serious issue – that of refugees from Sudan making their way to Kenya and then to the USA prior to 9/11. After that this flow stopped. Carol and I found it very interesting and enlightening with an excellent cast. It was quite a story. The Rotary attendance was good – the theatre was filled.

Graham Thomson wrote:

The Good Lie follows the harrowing journey of Sudanese children refugees who survive a massacre of their village during the 1983 civil war. The young children endure a long walk across Africa to seek help from being killed or forced to serve in the military as child soldiers. After the hardships encountered in the wild they arrive at a refugee camp where the bond they have formed holds them together for 13 years before being repatriated to the United States of America.

On arrival in good old USA it's found that the survivors of the group have to be split up with the 3 males going to Kansas City and the sole female going to Boston. The film now focuses on the males getting to understand the western ways & how they adjust to their new surrounds. They are assisted in obtaining employment and support by a local employment agency and support agencies.

Following the efforts of the support person at the employment agency the boys are reunited with their "sister" in Kansas City before they undertake the task of locating their lost brother back in Sudan. Following the journey back "home" the lost brother is found and after assuming the identity of his brother arrives in USA while the younger brother stays in Africa to help the refugees.

To me the film highlighted the plight of refugees, particularly children, and what it could be like to leave your homeland & try and start a new life.

Hamburger Stand – 15 to 18 October

Adrian Innes reminded us that 15 to 18 October is the Geelong Show and it will be all hands to the hamburgers as we Sizzle for Service and Fry in Friendship.

Working With Children Checks

We need Working With Children Checks for contact with our Exchange students. The application is done on line at the Department of Justice website and you need a photo and 100 ID points.

Consent to Publication forms

Those members who have not as yet completed, signed and returned to the Club Secretary the Consent to Publication forms distributed in June are asked to do so.

Our 15 September Meeting - No Buckleys

We will be at The Davidson Restaurant for our third Tuesday committee meetings - three small courses for $30.00.

We are really lucky to have Rach Brennan not only speaking about her tour of Europe, but she has agreed to serenade us with a few songs! Rach is a singer/songwriter and follows the traditions set by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Carole King with a hint of Kate Bush! She performs regularly around Victoria and South Australia and is just about to depart on her second tour of Europe.

Friends, family and guests are most welcome so please call 5272 1700 to book in by 11.00 am on Monday Sept 7th.
