Last Week's Program

Last Week’s Meeting
Tony Alsop was our chair and this was our Club Assembly.
We discussed venue and whether the meeting "formalities" such as the invocation, the loyal toast, the toast to Rotary International and the singing of the national anthem should be retained, dispensed with, modified or reserved for special occasions.
A number of issues were raised regarding the venue alternatives and, after a vigorous debate and discussion the members determined by a vote to change the meeting venue from 12 July to The Eastern Hub......Gexit?
The Board will liaise with The Eastern Hub staff to address those matters of concern which were raised in the discussion.

As to the meeting "formalities", there was a lively exchange followed by a vote, results as follows:

Retain Toast to the Queen and the People of Australia: Yes 13 No 18.
Retain Toast to RI: Yes 1 No 26.
Retain Invocation: Yes (unanimous).
Retain National Anthem : Yes (2 against).
The meeting closed upon the singing of the National Anthem....with, despite the strength of the Yes vote, no discernible improvement in choral quality!

These are now due and payable and are $230.00 for members and $215.00 is the concessional rate.

Rotaract District Change Over
We are invited to attend the Rotaract District Change Over at Warracknabeal at 2.00 pm this Saturday 2 July at the Rural Northwest Health Community Room (cost is 45.00 per head for finger food) where Liz Fagan the current President of the Rotaract Club of Barwon will be inducted as DRR (District Rotaract Representative) and Chloe Boyd (Immediate Past President) will be inducted as District Secretary.

The ceremony will be held in Warracknabeal, hosted by the Rotaract and Rotary clubs there. It's a bit of a drive but it would mean a lot to Liz and Chloe to see Geelong East represented there.

President Andrew is going and members who would like to attend are asked to liaise with President Andrew to book and for more details.

Meetings at Eastern Hub in June and from 12 July
We will hold our weekly Club meetings at The Eastern Hub, 285A McKillop Street, East Geelong on Tuesday 28 June and from and including 12 July
Because of the nature and size of the catering enterprise at The Eastern Hub, we will not have the same latitude with numbers attending as we have been enjoying with Buckleys.
It is therefore more important than ever that Rotarians call through their apologies and extra numbers attending by the midday Monday deadline.
The phone number for apologies and extras remains as before.
Also, any special dietary requirements need to be notified.
From 12 July, a single course meal be provided as the default at each weekly meeting at a cost of $20.00 and $15.00 for Rotaractors which a two course meal and finger food being available from time to time.
We will return to Buckleys for our Changeover on 5 July.

Dining with Dorothy
The International Service Committee is reviving the Friday night international nosh with Italy at Cucina One12, 112 High Street, Belmont on 22 July.

L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program
Warren Norton (disguised as James Dunlop) advised the meeting that this is an initiative of the City of Greater Geelong Youth Development Unit and reminded us that Tania Dudas, who spoke at our Club last year, has approached our Club to recruit volunteer mentors to assist those learner drivers who do not have access to a vehicle and/or a licensed supervising driver to gain the requisite hours of driving experience before taking their test.
Full training for mentors will be provided and the training dates for this round of recruitments is 16 and 17 July.
This is our chance to help improve the quality of road use by young drivers and assist young people to get mobile and independent....and maybe talk to them about Rotary youth programs and Rotaract?
For more details contact Tania on 0400 555 273 or 5272 4680.

Defying The Drift
The Defying the Drift program which takes place at Marcus Oldham Farm Management College over 3 days at the end of September can accommodate 45 participants and this is the seventh year of the operation of the program.
It is designed for Year 9 and 10 students to encourage interest in careers which have a rural focus - whether farming and agricultural, health, the environment, teaching, commerce etc.
Members are asked to promote the program and Stan can provide more information and application forms.
The cost is minimal ($150.00 per student) and the potential return on this investment is incalculable.
