Topic: - From David Miles

"Fighting Fires & Breaking Drought with Weather Management" means the use of emerging technologies to influence some or all of the key elements of weather behaviour, such as rainfall trajectory and wind speeds.

My company Aquiess Pty Ltd has run many international demonstrations during times of weather crises, as examples of the power to impact the massive forces of natural disasters. After four years in the Middle East, I have returned to Australia to establish a Data-Immersion facility and to introduce this technology to the government, emergency services organisations and communities that may be in need of fire and drought prevention, or crisis intervention.

In this presentation I will debut the Data Immersion centre (under development) and the primary weather capability offering, whilst covering some examples of services we have already undertaken in Australia. (Questions welcomed.)

Announcements, News and Help Required
Hamburger Happiness
John Birrell reported a profit of just over $2,000.00 from the Camp Quality catering last weekend with great support from our suppliers.
The Holden Day is 5 March with at least 14 needed on each shift so see if you can assist.
Fundraising Dinner Auction
David Sykes informed the Club that the Board has approved a fundraising dinner auction to be conducted in August.
The Club needs to consider the criteria for the beneficiaries and notice will be sent out in the Bulletin.
We have had great success with this type of fundraising in the past and with the support of the members we can raise a considerable sum.
Vocational Committee Report
Graham Thomson standing in for Sam reported that we are looking for a RYLA nominee.
The Committee supports the Science and Engineering Challenge.
Defy The Drift again this year and contact Stan Deans if you would like to assist.
Sue Hill was the house mum last year and can tell you what it’s like on the inside.

Is there a first aider or two in the house?
In light of the events at the Christmas function at the Showgrounds, there is a need to identify those members with current first aid certification.
So if you can tell a splint from a splinter and a sprain from a spleen and you have the proof, the Club Secretary would like to record your details.

Eddification – Contributions to The Rotary Foundation

Eddie reported that contributions to TRF from members for 2015/16 up to and including the Pancake Night were in excess of $3,000.

He had established that those involved  requested that  a total of $1,116 go to The Annual Programs fund and $1,449 go to PolioPlus,  a total of $2,565 which averaged $116.60 per member.

A total of $489 has been held back, mainly at the request of those contributing to that amount so that they can increase their overall contributions to go with all others  at the end of May.

He also  reminded members that while The Foundation likes all Rotarians to donate at least $100 each year and become Centurions, the Club's Foundation Committee has the goal of a minimum of $10 per member and that all donations were tax deductible.

Weekly contributions can still be made while paying Dinner Fees and cheques should be made out to The Rotary Club of Geelong East.  The amounts received will be distributed according to the wishes of those concerned.

Ride the Bellarine – End Polio Now Campaign
This event which is planned for Sunday 3rd April 2016 is a joint project of the Rotary Clubs of Geelong & District under the auspices of District 9780.
Ride the Bellarine is purely a recreational ride which has replaced Amy’s Ride which moved to Ballarat in 2014.
The day consists of three rides:
  • The Long Ride of 105kms through Drysdale, Portarlington, Indented Head, St Leonards, Point Lonsdale, Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Thirteenth Beach Road, Barwon Heads.
  • The Short Ride of 60kms through Drysdale, Ocean Grove then joins the long ride; and
  • A Family 20km ride to Point Henry and back.
The entry fees are $75.00, $55.00 & $25.00 respectively and the registration fees are used to promote & run the event with donations & sponsorships are to be paid directly to The Rotary Foundation.
The Ride the Bellarine Committee is requesting the following:
  • Riders & teams from Rotary Clubs to take part in the Ride;
  • Volunteers to act as marshals from 7.00am to 3.00pm on the day and the request is that clubs supply one (1) volunteer for every four (4) members – which equates to around thirteen (13) for our Club who are required by the end of this month (28 February);
  • High visibility or yellow vests; and
  • Rotary banners, flags, bunting anything bright & colorful.

The event attracted over 200 riders last year and raised $17,404.00 towards the End Polio Now campaign and, with the Gates Foundation contribution, this equated to $52,212.00.
The Committee is again calling on the generosity and support of this Club for the successful running of this event.
Please speak to PP Ross Taylor if you would like to assist.

Showgrounds catering
This will need Burger Bodies on the following dates at the Showgrounds so keep a look out for the roster going around or call Adrian or John Birrell.
  • 5 March (Holden Day);
  • 11th to 13th March – Music Festival;
  • 12th May (Swap Meet);and
  • 13th to 16th October the Geelong Show.

Conference – Request for assistance from DG Jane Cox:

Hello Andrew and Peter
Just wondering if any of the Geelong East members would be interested in helping us with a couple of tasks for Conference.
Our Club members will be busy helping with setup etc on the Friday but I may be able to source 1 to assist with a pick up from the airport.
We have 3 speakers arriving at Melbourne airport on Friday 18 March and unfortunately not at the same time.
2 are flying in from New Zealand - one at 3.05pm and the other arrival time to be confirmed and then one arriving from Adelaide at 5.15pm.
We also have a speaker arriving at Avalon ex Sydney 5pm on the Saturday but I will see if we can spare a Club member for that pick up.
If this is not of interest please feel free to say so but thought I would ask – it would help us out greatly.
Regards
Jane
If you can assist, please call DG Jane on 0418 345331or 52615506 (AH) or email  jncox4@bigpond.com
