Members were treated to half year reports from the various committees.

 

International Andrew told us of the big year coming up with a significant Cambodian project for which a Global Grant will be sought.

This year the Committee has distributed around $8,000.00 to a variety of worthy causes including the Cambodian water project under Bryan Humphrey’s watchful eye, Shelter Box, Interplast, Wheelchairs for Kids, Days for Girls, DIK containers, ROMAC and the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Our International Night to be held in May will have a Cambodian theme

 

The Community Service Committee chaired by James Dunlop report is looking at ways of supporting the Wye River community following the recent bushfire. Donations have been made to Christ Church Meals, the Social Organisation for The Handicapped and the 1^st Eastern Park (Try Boys) Scout Troop.

The excellent work of Keith Dawson and his team on the Barwon River Emergency Markers Project was acknowledged.

 

On the Vocational and Youth Service front, Sam and Bernadette and their combined committee are doing great work including the awards to our local schools, the promotion of the RYLA program and the Pride of Workmanship Award for presentation at a forthcoming meeting and possible involvement in the Gordon scholarships program.

 

Sue Hill provided a fundraising committee report and advised that there is a dinner auction planned for August-September of this year to support two charities to be selected.

 

Graham Fleet channelling David Sykes asked up to think about people who we could invite to membership of our Club.

 

Chris Adam masquerading as Tony Alsop gave us a Public Relations committee report.

The marquees are available for events.

The Rotary caps are available and the bucket-style hats will be ordered if there is sufficient interest. Interested members will have their names and the size of their buckets placed on the Bucket List.

All members are encouraged to propose guest speakers and to submit Club Runner stories.

Our Book of Face continues to win Friends and our Big Banner is safe and sound.

There is a pictorial guide to room set up in the cupboard so we all can know what goes where when we are on Room duty and our room can bloom and we avoid the doom of a gloomy room.

 

Graham Thompson managed skillfully on a rapidly expiring laptop battery to give us a quick update on the Barwon River safety marker project which is making great progress. We saw photos of the river and Keith and…..a detailed report will be provided by Keith via email to members.

Special thanks were extended to all those members, family and friends who have been so generous with their time in selling tickets for our Ballarat South raffle effort.

 

Particular thanks are in order to Sue and James Dunlop for their never-ending energy in arranging the rosters and keeping Club members up to date with progress in ticket sales and roster requirements.

To date the Ballarat South raffle has ticket sales of approaching $8,500.00 of which our Club will receive some $6,000.00 for our charitable purposes.

 

Next week’s meeting (Tuesday 19 February) will be held at the Geelong Boat House on Western Beach. It’s the fish and chip ship trip which we enjoyed last year too.

The meal cost will be $20.00 per head with children at $12.50 and friends and family are all welcome.

Assemble at 6:15pm for a 6:30pm start with wines etc at bar prices.

 

Our Pancake Night will be 9 February at Maison Macvean and donations for the fundraising raffle would be greatly appreciated.

 

John Birrell reported on the hamburger stand sales at the vintage truck rally.

From sales of around $5,500.00 a profit of approximately $3,470.00 was made and again thanks are extended to all the members, family and friends who gave of their time with particular thanks to our Rotaractors.

 

Graham Fleet advised the meeting that there are still 2 or 3 seats available for the Probus trip to King Island from Easter Monday until the Thursday. It is excellent value.

 

Our Exchange Student Luca gave us an update on “Life as Luca” and provided photographic evidence of his activities including a less than sombre visit to the Shrine of Remembrance, surfing at Torquay, jet skiing, Christmas in the pool, sailing and playing tennis.

Luca is looking forward to the visit from his father in February and to the mini safari coming up to Mount Gambier.

Luca has also witnessed Australian culture at its highest…in the form of the AC/DC concert in December.

Mention was made of a school report but details were……sketchy.
