The Rotary Nature Strip Project is an environmental initiative that transformed Geelong’s grass nature strips into vibrant indigenous pollinator gardens. What began as a small pilot quickly became one of the region’s most successful community‑environment collaborations.

🌿 How It Started

In 2025, four Rotary clubs — Geelong, East Geelong, Bayside, and Highton — partnered with the City of Greater Geelong to trial nature strip conversions using draft council guidelines. The response from residents was immediate and a waiting list for future rounds.

🌼 Expansion Across Geelong

Following the pilot’s success, Rotary secured a Climate Change Partnership Grant and teamed up with Coastcare and Bellarine Landcare Nursery to expand the project. In 2026, the program supported 100 households across Geelong and the Bellarine.

Each participating household received: 

• Site assessment
• Grass removal guidance
• A simple garden design template
• Mulch
• 20 indigenous plants
• Ongoing support from Rotary volunteers

🐝 Environmental Impact

The project replaced lawn “monocultures” with habitat‑rich gardens that:

• Support bees, butterflies, and native pollinators
• Improve water retention and reduce runoff
• Lower emissions through reduced mowing
• Create biodiversity corridors linking fragmented habitats
